Breaking Down the Infinite Workday
Microsoft examines how fragmented attention, constant communication and expanding work hours are creating an “infinite workday” for many employees.
Work is increasingly extending beyond the traditional workday, with emails, meetings, messages, and interruptions competing for attention from early morning into the evening.
Microsoft’s Work Trend Index examines what it calls the “infinite workday,” showing how fragmented communication, after-hours work, frequent interruptions, and increasingly complex collaboration can make sustained focus and recovery difficult.
This matters because employee strain is not always an individual resilience problem. Workload design, communication expectations, meeting culture, constant availability, and fragmented attention can all contribute to overload.
We recommend this report because it gives leaders useful data for examining whether everyday organizational practices may be contributing to exhaustion, reduced focus, and difficulty recovering from work.
